Unemployment and poverty are rampant in the Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar, as are the feelings of hopelessness amongst its population.
Tserenpurev, a father of 7, says “Our whole family is unemployed except my wife Oyuntsetseg. She works at nearby school as a cleaner and we manage to survive on her meagre wage of 65,000 Tugrig ($55) and my pension fee of 60,000 Tugrig ($51)". Holding his youngest son, Sukhbat who is three years old, he adds “we live in candle light, as our home does not have electricity". His supply was cut off as he was not able to afford the bills. He says “there are many like myself who are poor and feel utterly helpless living here in the Ger districts". |

In August 2006 and May 2006, AMURT distributed 'relief packages' including food, clothes blankets and school
materials to 10 families in a Ger district of
Ulaanbaatar. Identified by the sub-district office as families
most in need of help, they were very appreciative of our service. AMURT
has plans to make this a regular program, serving the most need
residents of Ulaanbaatar.
